For over 40 years, Butterwick Hospice has supported local people and communities across our regions of Teesside and County Durham. We provide holistic care for children and adults living with a life-limiting illness, as well as support for their families and loved ones.
In the words of our founder, Mary Butterwick OBE, “This place is all about love. Without the love of the community, it can’t exist.”
What Makes Us Different?
We understand the importance of holistic care for the children and adults in our local community and the services we offer provide support for the whole family. Based in three Hospices, across two sites, we prioritise not just the physical, but also the mental health and wellbeing of our patients and their loved ones.
We believe in embracing life’s journey with compassion and care and aim to make every day the best it can be for each of our patients and their loved ones.
We are only able to continue to provide our services thanks to the incredible support of loyal individuals, groups and businesses within our local community.
Our History
Our Founder Mary Butterwick faced tragedy in 1979 when her beloved husband, John, died suddenly of cancer. Mary was told to go home and forget about her husband, there was nothing she could do. But Mary didn’t do that, instead she sat down and designed a place where people could go with a kind word and a homecooked meal.
In January 1984 after selling her family home to kick start the funding she needed, Mary Butterwick opened the first day hospice in Stockton. Mary and a small group of volunteer nurses and supporters delivered her recipe of loving care and compassion to those who were at the end of their life, and gave comfort and hope to their loved ones.
Forty years later, Mary’s legacy has continued and we now offer care to babies, children and adults across Teesside and County Durham, as well as support for their families.
