Butterwick Hospice at Bishop Auckland provides services to Bishop Auckland, Durham Dales Sedgefield and surrounding areas. These include Complementary Therapy, Physiotherapy, Group Sessions and Counselling, for people suffering from life limiting illnesses. Our Home Care Service also operates from our Bishop Auckland site.
Our Group Sessions offer a great opportunity to meet people facing similar challenges. This can help to alleviate fears and feelings of isolation. The Bishop Auckland Group Sessions offer an informal social environment where you can chat, meet new friends, get help and advice for yourself and your loved ones and participate in lots of diverse activities.
Wellbeing with Cancer
When: Tuesday 9:30am – 12:30pm
What to Expect: A prehab focussed group for before and during treatment.
Group Info:
- 8 weekly sessions
- 3-hour sessions, includes social time & refreshments
- Facilitated by holistic health & wellbeing practitioners
- Therapist taster sessions of Complementary Therapy & Auricular Acupuncture
- Physiotherapist input
- Counsellor support
- Guest speakers & engaging talks
- Information and promotion around diet & nutrition, movement & exercise, smoking & alcohol
- Encouragement to optimise physical & emotional health before and during treatment
- Talking together
- Relaxation Interventions e.g. Guided Meditations, Sound bath therapy, Breathwork.
Neuro Support Hub
When: Tuesday 10:30am – 12:30pm
What to Expect: This a Peer support group for neurological patients.
Facilitated by our team, we encourage talk therapy, sharing of experiences and coping strategies.
Refreshments included.
Group Info: This group is open to those living with a Neurological condition that impacts daily life.
Seated Exercise Group
When: Tuesday 1:30pm – 3pm
What to Expect: Chair based exercises including activities, games and resistance band exercises aimed at strengthening the body. Facilitated by our Physiotherapist.
Group Info: This group is open to anyone with a life limiting illness.
Standing Exercise Group
When: Wednesday 9:30am – 11am & 11am – 12:30pmÂ
What to Expect: Gentle circuit training that covers cardio, strength and balance exercises. Facilitated by our Physiotherapist.
Cold refreshments included.
Group Info: This group is open to those living with a life limiting illness. Please speak to your healthcare provider for a referral. Assessments will be conducted before the group sessions begin.
Arts and Crafts Club
When: Tuesday 1pm – 3pm
What to Expect: Let out your creative side with our arts and craft group. With a different craft every week, there is something for everybody. No experience necessary!
HOPE and LGFB Group
A referral is required via Macmillan, who facilitate these groups.
What to Expect:Â
Look Good Feel Better is a workshop based session which offers an invaluable opportunity to talk to others in a similar situation, whilst helping support people with their changing appearance. People leave the workshops feeling empowered, motivated and less isolated – allowing them to feel more confident during their cancer journey.
Hope overcoming problems effectively (Help Overcoming Problems Effectively) is a group-based programme which supports people to overcome obstacles or issues following treatment for cancer. It combines positive psychology, mindfulness and group therapy to allow cancer patients to explore and adapt to their ‘new normal’.
A referral required through Macmillan for these groups.
Auricular Acupuncture
When:
Wednesday 10am – 12pm
Thursday 10am – 12pm & 1pm – 3pm
What to Expect: Auricular Acupuncture involves the gentle insertion of five small sterile needles into each ear. These points have been selected by NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association) as the most effective, because they correspond to areas of the body which govern its main functions, there can be numerous benefits to treatment.
Auricular Acupuncture can help with:
- Relaxation
- Stress/anxiety relief
- Sleep problems
- Hot flushes
- Fatigue
- Nausea and pain relief
Relaxation Group
When: Wednesday 1:30pm – 3pm
What to Expect: Facilitated by a Complementary Therapist, this group focuses on relaxation techniques, sleep hygiene and general relaxation and wellness techniques that you can apply to everyday life.
